As regular readers of my Anti-Cancer Challenge know, I am planning to get more, and better-quality, sleep during the next year (and beyond, hopefully). I have been feeling decidedly groggy these last few months due to working late, or tossing and turning in bed because I didn't give myself time to wind down before bedtime. And upon researching the subject of sleep I have become increasingly aware that that insufficient or disrupted sleep may increase our risk of disease: not only cancer (see this recent post), but also diabetes, heart disease, a weakened immune system, inflammation and weight gain. Having written a cancer-prevention cookbook due to be published later this year, I am grateful to have found such a widely-read platform from which to air my views on healing foods. More...

Contrary to our usual dining habits (soups, stews, lots of vegetables and lean protein), my family and I will be feasting on pancakes tonight to mark “La Chandeleur,”or Candlemas. While the religious significance of this day (the day of candles and the date on which, according to Christian tradition, the baby Jesus was presented by his parents at the Temple in Jerusalem) is largely forgotten, the pancake tradition lives on undiminished.
